What is Occultatio?

Occultatio (also known as “Occupatio,” “paralipsis,” “apophasis,” “praeteritio.”), is an act of pretense in which what the speaker pretends not to mention is at the same time really affirmed or insinuated: thus, “I say nothing of your midnight debaucheries, I pass over your riotous and indecorous conduct.”

Occultatio is a synonym for Apophasis. See ApophasisOpens in new window.
